Robert V. Smith Jr.

Robert V. Smith Jr., affectionately known as Bob Smith, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2026, at the age of 79, just days shy of his 80th birthday.

Bob was born on August 30, 1946, and grew up in the Chicago area. He was the son of Robert V. Smith and Dorothy Smith (Anderson). He graduated from Western Illinois University, where he forged lifelong friendships and remained close with his Phi Theta fraternity brothers for decades.

On July 27, 1968, Bob married the love of his life, Judy. Together they shared 58 years of marriage, building a family filled with love, support, and countless cherished memories. Shortly after getting married, Bob was drafted into the United States Army during the Vietnam War, where he proudly served his country for two years. Following college and military service, Bob built a successful career with Osram Sylvania, serving as both a salesman and training manager. He was respected for his professionalism, leadership, and dedication.

Bob had many passions throughout his life. He was an avid sports fan who faithfully cheered for both Chicago and Arizona teams, rarely missing an opportunity to watch football, baseball, or golf. His favorite athletes, however, were always his grandchildren. Nothing brought Bob greater pride and joy than his family. He loved attending games, celebrating milestones, sharing stories, and spending time with those he loved most.

A devoted golfer himself, Bob enjoyed countless rounds over the years and generously volunteered with the Arizona Golf Association and was named the 2024 Volunteer of the Year. He was also a dedicated blood donor, quietly helping countless people he would never meet. Whether through volunteerism, blood donation, or simply lending a hand to a friend or neighbor, Bob believed in making a difference.

Those who knew Bob will remember his kindness, integrity, sense of humor, and loyalty to family and friends. He valued relationships, kept his commitments, and treated others with respect. His warmth and generous spirit touched many lives.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Judith (Naslund); his children, Mark (Christy), Tim, and Jennifer (Shannon); his sister, Nancy Metcalf; his six treasured grandchildren, Madison (Daniel), Delaney, Carson, Violet, Scarlett, and Oliver; and his great-grandson, Lincoln.

A memorial will be held on Saturday, September 19 at 10:00 a.m. at Love of Christ Lutheran Church, 1525 N. Power Road, Mesa, AZ 85205. Bob would love you to leave your suits and black dresses in the back of your closet. Wear your favorite golf shirt or summer dress in his honor.

Bob's life was a testament to love, service, friendship, and generosity. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
