A Life Remembered

Obituary

Edward James Surchik

Edward J Surchik of Gilbert, Arizona, passed away unexpectedly on October 17th, 2026 at the age of 54. Ed was a man of faith, of integrity and of a deep love of family.

Born August 18th, 1972, in Harvey, Illinois, to Jim and Karen Surchik, Ed moved with his family to Arizona in 1982 where he remained into his adult life. He attended Christian school and still spoke of his friends and his years on the high school soccer team along with a variety of other sports. He attended college and received an associate’s degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for both SRP and the City of Mesa before finding his true calling in real estate and never looked back.

Ed’s goal in his career was to deliver a high level of competence and a high standard of care, as everyone who was blessed by his knowledge of real estate can attest. He had a servant’s heart and cared deeply for each of his clients, working tirelessly to provide for their best interests and peace of mind. He worked hard and played hard, enjoying Cardinals and Coyotes/Mammoth games, church on Sundays, and spending time with his family amidst helping countless families find their forever homes.

Ed and his high school sweetheart Barb were married in 1992. The two enjoyed countless adventures together before three kids introduced new ones. Evenings and weekends spent beside soccer fields, volleyball courts, or in the rink, Ed made sure to pour into each of his kids throughout their childhoods and every day since, and loved attending their sporting events or musical performances. He was excited to see where their lives would take them in the future. He built an oasis of a yard in his home, enjoying “staycations” and Arizona sunsets almost every night while his dogs lounged nearby and hockey played on the tv.

Those who know Ed know that he is a man of quotes and one-liners, appreciating good puns and epic hype videos alongside motivational speeches and rock music. He loved attending his youngest son’s hockey games, traveling all around the country with Barb to watch him play no matter the team he was on. Ed played plenty of basketball, racquetball, cornhole, and even volunteered to be goalie against the youth when his daughter and older son played indoor soccer. He loved being involved with cheering them on no matter the sport, team, or win rate, caring instead for how they treated their teammates and whether they did their best.

As a Christian, Ed’s greatest desire was that those he knew would know God. Those who share his and his family’s faith can be confident that they will meet again. He exemplified Jesus’ heart and intentionality with others and will be remembered with an abundance of love and wonderful memories of the short time he was given.

What we do in life echoes in eternity.
- Gladiator (2000)

Ed is survived by his wife Barb and kids Aubrey, Jakob, and Caden, as well as his mother Karen Surchik and sister Debbie Stephens.

In Ed’s memory, we ask that all who wish to express their gratitude for the way he touched their lives to consider donating to a youth sports program in their home area.
